NCC Art Department Faculty
Born Barbara Jackson, in Portsmouth, Virginia, December 1952. At a young age her family discouraged her from pursuing her love of creating art. She then treated her fine art abilities as a hobby until about 11 years ago.
In 1981 she married Ronald Briggs. After years working in many different professions including a stint in the U. S. Army, a telemarketer, Computer Programmer and having an online business. Barbara’s husband Ron encouraged her to take a course in painting at the local community college (NCC), where she was attending to earn a business degree.
Barbara changed her major and went on to receive a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Kutztown University 2006, where she studied with nationally know watercolor artist and educator, Mathew Daub. Barbara then went on to complete a Masters of Fine Art from Academy of Art University, San Francisco, CA, where once again she had the chance to study with several nationally know Artists, including Warren Chang and Craig Nelson. She has now been teaching in the Art department at Northampton Area Community College since 2009.
For the past several years Barbara has been motivated to create portrait and figurative paintings. Her style lends itself to a unique, realistic interpretation of the individual or individuals she may portray. Placing in an International Art Competition Hosted by Chroma, Inc., Lately she has shown at ‘Naked in New Hope’ where 5 of her nudes were included in the juried exhibition.
She is now working on a series of pieces being created as a direct result of a road trip from Fairbanks, Alaska to Bangor, PA. Traveling through Denali National Park and glaciers in Alaska through the Canada Rockies, the American Rockies, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming and eastward to Pennsylvania. These pieces are and will be done in oil, encaustics, photography and mixed media.
